Weather Network: Earthquake jolts Alberta, knocking out power and shutting down gas plant

By Dalia Ibrahim, Digital Reporter

It was a shaky start to the day for parts of Alberta Saturday.

According to Natural Resources Canada. a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck an area west of Red Deer at 9:28 a.m. local time.

No damage or injuries were reported, but the quake did disrupt power for about 500 customers, including a gas plant near Rocky Mountain House, according to The Canadian Press.

AltaLink spokesperson Scott Schreiner told the agency a substation in the area locked out to prevent a surge or other damage on the system, and that power was restored about two hours later.

Keyara Corp., which operates the Strachan gas plant, says the facility flared off excess gas when it lost power, but there was no damage.
