Weather Alerts for Foothills with Heavy Rainfall and Possible Funnel Clouds

Warnings

3:35 PM MDT Wednesday 10 August 2016
Rainfall warning in effect for:

  • M.D. of Foothills near Cayley
  • M.D. of Foothills near High River and Aldersyde
  • M.D. of Foothills near Longview and Eden Valley Res.
  • M.D. of Foothills near Okotoks and De Winton
  • M.D. of Foothills near Priddis and Brown-Lowery Prov. Park
  • M.D. of Foothills near Turner Valley and Black Diamond
  • M.D. of Willow Creek near Claresholm and Stavely
  • M.D. of Willow Creek near Nanton and Parkland
  • Rocky View Co. near Bragg Creek and Tsuu T’ina Res.

Rain, at times heavy, is expected. The ground, already near saturation, has little ability to absorb further rainfall.

An upper low pressure system over southeastern Alberta continues to produce showers and occasional thunderstorms. 25 to 35 mm has fallen today in some locations in southwestern Alberta. The showers and thunderstorms will taper off overnight. Local rainfall amounts of 50 to 70 mm are expected by the time the rainfall ends.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop. Avoid driving through water on roads. Even shallow, fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle or a person away.

Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.

Funnel clouds are possible today.

As well, some areas may also experience localized heavy rainfall under more intense thunderstorms this evening.

These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous. They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.

Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.
