Cochrane, AB – On August 21, 2012 at 12:46am, Cochrane RCMP responded to a complaint of a fire at the Chief Chiniki Restaurant. When police arrived at scene and despite efforts from Nakoda Fire Department from Stoney First Nation, along with Cochrane and Springbank Fire Departments the local business could not be saved. During the police investigation it was determined that the fire was a result of an Arson. The estimated loss from this arson was over $1,000,000. Through the assistance and cooperation of community members charges were laid against an adult and three young persons who cannot be named.
On July 9, 2014, a local resident of the Stoney First Nation, Noelan Twoyoungmen, 22 years of age plead guilty to one count of Arson under section 434 of the Criminal Code with regards to this fire. He has received a two year Federal sentence of imprisonment.
