Turner Valley Braves Battle to Bronze


The Turner Valley Braves mixed slo-pitch team returned home from the Canada 55+ National Games in Sherwood Park with a bronze medal in the 55+ mixed division. This team has won medals in all provincial and national games since its formation in 2009.

”It’s not only about playing ball, it’s about team bonding, friendship, enjoying each other’s company and having fun. The ball is secondary”. This is coach Harry Cowan’s philosophy and has been since day 1. He invited players to be part of the team based on this philosophy.

Mickey Getten helps to keep the team organized and Shelley Getten, not only is the best scorekeeper in AB., she provides the players with TLC, motivation and encouragement when needed.

The core group of players representing Zone 2, have been together since 2009. They include: Harry Cowan (player, coach) Turner Valley, Pat Drinnan, Cochrane, Rick Stauffer, Strathmore, Bruce Young, Black Diamond, Phil Paul, High River, Mickey Getten, High River, Dean Younggren, High River, Jackie Stickel, Black Diamond, Linda Schaal, Red Deer Lake, Linda Nelson, Black Diamond.

Players who have joined the group in the past couple of years include: Shelley Young, Black Diamond, Deb Morrison, Olds, Norma Dawson, Millarville, Stewart Thomson, Black Diamond, Ray Minue, Okotoks, Randy Irwin, High River.
The team is looking forward to representing Zone 2 in Strathmore at the provincial competition in 2015.
