Town of Okotoks and MD of Foothills Reach Annexation Agreement in Principle

The Town of Okotoks and the MD of Foothills have agreed, in principle, to an annexation area plus other elements discussed in negotiations on March 29, 2016. The Town and the MD have met 11 times in the past 14 months in mediated sessions to determine the details of this annexation.

“It is positive to have reached this point of agreement within the negotiations and we are looking towards the next steps,” said Foothills Mayor Larry Spilak.

“Okotoks is pleased to have reached an annexation agreement with Foothills and we look forward to successful collaboration now and into the future,” said Okotoks Mayor Bill Robertson.

The annexation process began in September 2013 when the Town of Okotoks issued its notice of intent to annex approximately 33 quarter sections from the MD of Foothills. Negotiations between the two municipalities began in early 2014 and concluded on March 29, 2016. Okotoks plans to submit its Annexation Application to the Municipal Government Board this summer, allowing the Province to make the annexation official by January 1, 2017.
