Town Explores Interest in Community Gardens

High River, AB: The Town of High River is once again reaching out to residents to explore whether there is sufficient interest in developing additional community gardens in High River. This was being explored prior to the 2013 flood and the Town is resuming the project to determine if the level of interest has changed.

Community GardenA brief survey has been posted on the Town’s website to determine residents’ interest and to open discussions on what would be required to establish a community-run gardening project.

“Right now, we are just trying to discover if there are enough people who would like access to a garden,” said Sarah Mitchell, parks and culture coordinator for the Town. “If there is sufficient interest then the next step would be to support the formation of a stakeholder group who would spearhead the project.”

“The ultimate goal is to have a community garden that would be managed by residents,” explained Mitchell; “so we are also looking for individuals who would be willing to volunteer on an organizing committee that would help to determine how the gardens will be developed.”

A page called Community Garden has been created under the Public Forum menu on the Town’s website, www.highriver.ca, where the survey can be found. It will be available until June 15 and the town will only proceed if enough residents have indicated an interest in using a community garden.
