Jim Prentice issued the following statement as Albertans mark Black History Month, February 1 to 28, 2015.
“February is Black History Month in Alberta and across Canada. This year’s theme is ‘Black History Then & Now: A Link in Time.’
“Accustomed as we are to the growing diversity of Alberta, it would surprise many to learn that the first Black settlers arrived in our province as far back as the 1870s. Alberta’s Black community today is woven from a wealth of cultural strands, and the heritage of many nations. Black men and women play a vital economic, social and cultural role in modern Alberta.
“I invite all Albertans to observe Black History Month by learning more about the complexity and richness of Alberta’s Black community, ‘then and now.’”
