Alberta – Many Albertans have much cause to celebrate, following the announcement of the 2015 STARS Lottery grand prize winners Thursday. The lottery raised more than $11.2 million net, with 3,227 prizes worth more than $5.3 million retail.
Calgary resident and Edmonton show home winner Justin Hasanen was overjoyed with his win.
“I have twin baby girls and a two-year-old son. I am a journeyman mechanic and it’s expensive to live in Calgary. All I worry about day in and day out is money and providing a terrific life for my family,” said Hasanen, who has purchased tickets for several years in a row. “I took the day off work, went home, hugged my wife and cried. You have no idea how grateful we are. Thank you.”
Andrea Robertson, president and CEO of STARS, was on the line delivering the good news to a shocked and overjoyed Hasanen Thursday morning.
“Telling people they’ve won wonderful prizes for supporting STARS is a great perk of our job,” said Robertson, adding that lottery officials hear all sorts of reactions from winners, including disbelief.
“Knowing that winning a grand prize in the STARS Lottery can make a difference for one of our supporters is a wonderful feeling,” she said “At the end of the day the biggest winners are the people we help because of your support.”

Winners of $1.5 million from the Lucky STARS 50/50 draw, Joan and Wayne Cholak of Sherwood Park say they have been buying STARS lottery tickets for at least two decades.
“We’ve been there supporting STARS from the very beginning,” said Wayne, who is a real estate broker. “We have rural backgrounds so STARS is one of those charities that you never forget to support.”
Blairmore residents and winners of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4X4, Carol Lenz and Fred Horbay, say STARS is an organization second to none.
“We buy the $250 ticket package every year and would support STARS regardless of whether we win or not,” said Horbay, adding that winning is a great bonus. “STARS is a lifeline for the Crowsnest Pass and we’ve watched STARS fly over our house frequently. Friends of our children have been transported by STARS so we understand its importance.”
The STARS Lottery continues to be STARS’ single largest source of funding in Alberta, helping critically ill and injured patients across the province. This was the 22nd annual STARS Lottery, which has set records by selling out every year since it began – raising more than $146 million since 1994.
