Sheep Creek Arts Council: New Year – New Programs

Sheep_Creek_Arts_CouncilThe Sheep Creek Arts Council wishes to invite new and existing members to join us on Thursday, January 14th, 2016, to renew memberships, view examples of the 2016 projects and enjoy coffee and free draws. The appreciation session will be from 7 to 9 in the evening at 133 Sunset Blvd, West in Turner Valley. Membership in the Sheep River Arts Council is the bargain of the year at $10.

A number of ongoing groups will begin their winter endeavours the week following the registration evening. The Decorative Painters, with their instructor Evelyn Richmond, will begin either Monday, January 18th at 1pm or Thursday, January 21st at 7pm. Monday evenings the “Drop-in Painters” will continue to paint together until their instructor, Vivien Wiebe, returns to offer two “Paint Your Way” 10 class sessions, either Monday, May 2nd at 7pm or Thursday, May 5th at 1pm. Diamond Valley Quilt Club, open to beginners or accomplished quilters, meets on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesday of the month from 10:30am to 3:30pm beginning on January 6th. Knitters begin knitting and purling together on Tuesday, January 19th at 1:30pm. The Scrapbook Club meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month, beginning January 19th, at 7:30pm. The 3rd Tuesday is devoted to Cards with instructor, Shawna Case. On the last Tuesday evening of the month beginning at 7pm the oldest club in the SCAC, the Camera Club, holds its meetings. The first session of the winter will be on January 26th.

At least once per month the SCAC invites specialized instructors to offer one or two day workshops. On Saturday, January 30th from 10am to 4pm, anyone who wishes to explore the basics of using Brother Scan and Cut Machines is invited to come to the Arts Council to learn. Bring your own Scan and Cut or try ours. The cost is $35 plus a kit fee. A supply list is available (phone Evelyn at 403-933-3947). Chester Lees will provide an opportunity for budding artists to “Find Your Medium” on four Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9pm. The cost is $100 and includes all supplies. Each evening a different medium will be offered and will include: watercolour, acrylic, mixed media and Chinese brush. Kiev-style Russian Floral painting will be offered by Evelyn Richmond on Saturday and Sunday, February 6th and 7th, from 10am to 3pm. The cost is $50 for the workshop but some additional supplies need to be purchased by the students. Please call Evelyn at 403-933-3947 to information. Donna MacDonald is back to help students to “Loosen Up Your Paintings”. The one-day workshop (Saturday, February 13th, 10am to 4pm) will offer practical ways to give a looser look to paintings. There will be a rooster paint-a-long and it is open to all levels of painters using oil or acrylics. The cost is $70. Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30pm there will be an opportunity to learn the Scan and Cut Techniques by making a small table centre. The cost is $45 plus a kit fee and the classes will run from March 2nd to 23rd.

A Scrapbook Convention for Rowan House will be held at SCAC and Valley Neighbours’ Club on Saturday, March 5th from 10am to 10pm. The cost is $65 and includes lunch and dinner. Those attending are asked to bring their own supplies. There will be “make and takes”, door prizes, contests for layouts and cards. Proceeds will go to Rowan House. Joyce Brown is teaching applique and decorative stitching techniques in quilting to make a cowboy boot runner on Saturday, April 23rd, from 10am to 4pm at a cost of $35 from a kit fee. Another group of four Wednesday evening classes in quilting will be offered by Lorraine Venechuk from 6:30 to 9:30pm. These classes are called “Quilt as You Go” and will involve quilting 9 blocks, sewing and sashing them together to finish a quilt of 50 x 60 inches. The cost is $40 for 4 evenings May 4 to 25th.

A Camera Basics Course will again be offered by Chuck Murphy on 4 Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9pm. The cost is $40 and the course will be held beginning April 6th and ending on April 27th. Vivian Wiebe is inviting students with some experience with acrylics to join her on Saturday, May 28th, from 9:30am to 4pm to explore and paint dew and raindrops in nature and finish a painting in one day. The cost is $65.
