Town of Black Diamond appoints a new Chief Administrative Officer
Black Diamond, Alberta
Council for the Town of Black Diamond is pleased to announce the appointment of Sharlene Brown to the position of Chief Administrative Officer. She will begin her new duties on June 2, 2016.
Sharlene moves to the other side of the table after many years of municipal experience as an elected official. She was first elected to Council in 1998, and held a Councillor’s seat until 2007, when she lost a bid for the Mayor’s chair in a very close vote. A by-election in 2008 elected her as Mayor by a clear majority. She won the Mayor’s seat again in the general election of 2010, and was acclaimed in 2013.
During her time as an elected official, Sharlene has spent many hours working at the committee level on various local and Council committees. She has also participated on committees at the AUMA level. She has to her credit a number of courses through the Elected Officials Education Program as well as continuing to work toward her CLGM designation as a Certified Local Government Manager. This brings a wealth of knowledge from many areas of municipal governance to her resume, which will provide a unique and highly valuable benefit to both staff and Council.
Council has always placed great value on Sharlene’s local experiences, her vision for the community and her drive and ability to see those visions become reality over the years. It remains important to Council that the CAO lead the town through such upcoming issues as growth management, intermunicipal developments, provincial changes and the amalgamation feasibility study. They continue to have confidence in her vision, abilities and her love of community, as she assumes her new role as Chief Administrative Officer.
Sharlene’s resignation as Mayor was accepted by Council prior to appointing her as CAO. This will mean that a by-election will be required, in accordance with the Municipal Government Act. Details about the upcoming by-election will be published as they become available.
