High River, AB: A section of the Little Bow Creek has been closed to the public while crews complete the clean-up of a hydrocarbon spill that occurred on the weekend.
The spill affected a storm water catch basin that feeds into the creek as well as a section of the creek from the east end of 10th Ave SE near 1st Street to the area north of the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex. The spill, which occurred on Saturday, was quickly contained by Town staff who have been working with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resources (ESRD) to ensure that remediation meets environmental standards.
This area will remain closed to public access until crews have completed cleaning the site, which is expected to take approximately 10 days.
Samples of the contaminant have been sent to a lab for testing to determine exactly what entered the canal and to positively identify the source. It is likely that the hydrocarbons originated from a private property and the leak has been contained at that location.
