High River, AB February, 2016 – Rowan House Emergency Shelter invites the Foothills community to join the revolution and participate in a march raising awareness about violence against women. It will take place Saturday, February 13th at Ethel Tucker Park in Okotoks, starting at 1pm.

Statistics show that one in three women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s one billion women and girls. “These numbers are unacceptable,” said Community Relations Coordinator, Ally Cramm, “and we know that these things are happening in the Foothills so we have chosen to once again take part in the One Billion Rising movement.”

Rowan House staff, volunteers and community participants will start the march at Ethel Tucker Park, follow the typical parade route through downtown and then finish back at the park. Cramm said, “We were pretty excited to have about 50 people participate in last year’s first ever march in High River so we’re hoping to get even more people out this year.” However, if people are unable to walk they’re encouraged to still come out for the entertainment and speeches which get underway at Ethel Tucker Park at about 2pm.

“It’s meant to be a peaceful event where we can all stand together and say, Family Violence and Bullying are not okay,” added Cramm.

Rowan House Emergency Shelter provides crisis intervention, long-term support and education for those affected by family violence in rural communities.
