Ah, Valentine’s Day. Red and pink hearts, chocolate, flowers and cards. That all-important day of love recognized by couples all over North America and other parts of the world, but what about those trapped in unhealthy relationships?
1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.
Rowan House Emergency Shelter has decided to take part in this year’s 1 Billion Rising Revolution campaign.
On February 14th, we invite the Foothills community to meet us at Highwood High School in High River and march with us to George Lane Park to raise awareness about violence against women.
One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. One Billion Rising Revolution is an escalation of the first two stages of the campaign—One Billion Rising and One Billion Rising for Justice. Participants rise together worldwide to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable. Change can happen if we act now and we act together.
So on February 14th we will gather in the parking lot at Highwood at noon, with our march to leave promptly at 12:30pm. We will follow the Happy Trails to George Lane Park where we’ll wrap things up with speeches and entertainment.
Please go to www.onebillionrising.org/events/rowan-house-rise-high-river/ to RSVP. (The link is also on our Facebook page)
Our goal is to have 100 walkers along side us, but if you aren’t up for the task, we’d love to still see you for the festivities at George Lane Park at 2pm.
