RCMP – Southern Alberta – Weekend Update


 RCMP Cochrane Detachment – Arson Morley Alberta
Morley, AB – At approximately 0130 am on July 12th 2015 Members of Cochrane RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of a fire at the Morley Recreation Centre. Upon arrival there was a significant fire in a portion of the Centre. The Exshaw fire department was able to stop the spread of the fire to the adjacent arena however there was a significant amount of fire, smoke and water damage to the Centre.
At approximately 0230 am RCMP and the Morley Fire department responded to the Bearspaw Flood Relief camp for a grass fire. Morley Fire was able to contain the blaze before it spread.
RCMP quickly determined that both fires were intentionally set by the same people. As a result of their investigation Tylen Tray POUCETTE (18) of Morley and Conroy Koven POUCETTE (19) of Morley have been charged with two counts of arson. one count of breaking and entering with the intent to commit arson, and 1 count of unlawfully in a dwelling house. Both individuals have court dates of August 14th and August 21st respectively.
The Morley Recreation Centre is a significant building in the Morley Community. It is unknown how much of the building is repairable at this time.
RCMP Canmore Detachment – Injured Swimmer, Quarry Lake
Canmore, AB – At approximately 12:30 p.m. on July 12, 2015 members of the Canmore RCMP detachment were dispatched to a complaint of a missing female from the Quarry Lake Day Use area in Canmore.
The 19 year old female was among an informal church group of approximately 20 persons, from the Calgary area.  The group were swimming in Quarry Lake, and at one point, the group noted that young woman was no longer with her group at the lake.  Initially, it was believed that she was missing from the site.
As RCMP were en route, the young woman was found underwater.  CPR was performed locally, and she was transported to the Calgary Foothills hospital while resuscitation efforts continued.  At approximately 5:00 p.m., the young woman died from her injuries.
There is no indication of foul play, and injuries sustained were consistent with drowning.  It is believed that the young female was not an experienced swimmer, and she was not wearing a life jacket.
The identity of the victim is not being released.

RCMP Strathmore Detachment –  Fatal Collision

Strathmore, Alberta – The RCMP can confirm that at 3:25 p.m. July 11, a two vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of highways 817 and 901 in southern Alberta where two persons were killed as a result of the collision.
A Toyota Matrix traveling northbound on highway 817 was struck by a a semi truck hauling cement.  The semi truck was traveling westbound on highway 901.  Both persons within the Matrix, a 16 year old male from Strathmore and a 63 year old female believed from Calgary are deceased as a result of the collision.  The driver of the semi was not injured.

At this time, alcohol, weather and road conditions have been ruled out as factors in this collision.

With the assistance of the K Division Traffic Services Collision Analyst from Lethbridge, the collision remains under investigation.  Next of kin notifications are pending, and the identities of the deceased will not be released at this time.

With the assistance of the Collision Analyst and the Calgary Medical Examiners’ Office, the collision is still under investigation.
