RCMP Death Investigation – Sundre RCMP Respond to Firearms Incident

On September 7, 2014 at approximately 3:45PM, Members of the Sundre RCMP Detachment responded to a complaint of a male who was threatening to harm himself and armed with a firearm. Police responded, with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team. Upon arrival at the rural residence, located North of Sundre, the male was found deceased. Cause of death to be determined and confirmed, pending an autopsy scheduled for later this week. Foul play is not suspected.

The family of the deceased are requesting that the name of the male not be released. The 57 year old male was from the Sundre area.

No further information will be released at this time.

RCMP Kananaskis – Downed Aircraft

On September 7th, 2014, at 1350 hrs, Kananaskis RCMP were dispatched to a mayday call from a plane over the Kananaskis Lakes. Shortly after, the RCMP were updated that the plane had experienced engine failure but was able to safely land on Highway 40 near the Kananaskis Lakes Trail. RCMP and fire crews responded to the scene. The experienced pilot was the lone occupant of the aircraft, which was traveling from Springbank airport to Sparwood, B.C. He was not injured and the aircraft didn’t sustain any damage from the landing.

RCMP Pincher Creek – Fatal Motor Vehicle rollover

Pincher Creek RCMP and Emergency Services responded to a single vehicle rollover on Highway 507 aprox. 6 kms east of Pincher Creek at 830 pm Sept 06 2014 . A pickup that was west bound entered the north ditch, then crossed the highway and rolled onto its side through the south side of the ditch, into a grain field.

A 49 yr old female from Red Deer area was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 40 yr old male driver of the pickup truck from Pincher Creek was taken by EMS to Pincher Creek Hospital and later transported to Lethbridge Regional Hospital.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor, with the Pincher Creek RCMP continuing the investigation, charges are currently pending on the male driver of the pickup. No names will be released by RCMP pending next of kin notifications and criminal charges being filed.

RCMP Olds – Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision QE 2

September 7, 2014 at 0530 am Olds RCMP were dispatched to a serious collision on QE 2 north bound lanes south of Bowden at a rest stop. Olds fire and Emergency Services also attended the scene.

Investigation revealed that a light blue 1995 Buick Riviera traveling north bound ran into the rear of a Semi tractor trailer parked at the rest stop with its lights on. The tractor trailer was pulled off the travel portion of the hwy and legally parked. The driver of the Buick a 23 year old male and a unidentified female passenger were deceased at the scene when police arrived. The driver of the Semi was not injured and no charges will be laid against anyone.

Alcohol was not a factor in this collision.

The north bound lanes of QE 2 were closed for approximately 5 hours while the investigation was being conducted. Further information will be released once next of Kin notification is completed.
Olds RCMP are currently working to complete Next of Kin notification regarding the deceased parties and investigation is continuing.

RCMP Cochrane – Fatal Motorcycle Collision Highway 22 and Highway 8 Intersection

On September 6, 2014, 12:15 p.m. the Cochrane RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision on the traffic circle of Highway 22 and Highway 8. Information from witnesses state that the motorcyclist was northbound on Highway 22 and approaching the traffic circle intersection at Highway 8. The motorcyclist failed to yield for a semi truck and trailer unit that was making its way through the circle, and hit the trailer unit. The motorcyclist was killed instantly and traffic was routed around the location for a short period of time. RCMP are continuing their investigation and the deceased’s name is withheld pending N.O.K. notification.
