RCMP Commissioner Presents Bravery Award at Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament

OTTAWA – September 12, 2014 –RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson will present Musical Ride member, Cst. James Guthrie, with a Commissioner’s Commendation for Bravery at the Spruce Meadows Masters tournament today. The presentation will take place after the Musical Ride performance at Spruce Meadows at 4:30 (MT).

In March 2011, Cst. Guthrie, accompanied by two other RCMP members, responded to a call involving an escaped convict armed with a rifle. The members intercepted the suspect’s vehicle but he proceeded to fire shots at the RCMP members. Although Cst. Guthrie was injured, he persisted and his actions resulted in the apprehension of the escaped convict.

“On behalf of the RCMP, I want to thank Cst. Guthrie for his professionalism and his dedication to duty. Cst. Guthrie put the security and well-being of the public ahead of his own safety while demonstrating exceptional courage,” said Commissioner Paulson.

A Commissioner’s Commendation is awarded to an RCMP member in recognition of having demonstrated outstanding courage in the face of extremely dangerous and volatile circumstances that pose an imminent threat of grievous harm, personal injury or death.

Cst. Guthrie and the Musical Ride perform daily at the Spruce Meadows Masters tournament until September 14. The tournament is an annual equestrian show jumping event held in Calgary, AB., showcasing the best athletes from the world’s top show jumping nations.
