RCMP Alberta Update – St. Albert RCMP officers shot

Edmonton, Alberta – RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson and Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan, Commanding Officer of the RCMP in Alberta, spoke with members of the media today about the shooting of two RCMP officers in St. Albert.

D/Commr. Ryan provided an update on the medical conditions of the two RCMP officers shot in the early morning hours of Saturday, January 17.

“I have been in regular contact with the officers and their families since they arrived in hospital in Edmonton yesterday,” said D/Commr. Ryan, “Our thoughts remain with those officers and their families. I thank them all for their service and commitment to the RCMP and the community.”

Constable David Wynn remains in hospital in very grave condition and has yet to regain consciousness. Auxiliary Constable Derek Bond was released from hospital on the evening of Saturday, January 17. He will require ongoing medical care.

Commr. Paulson also spoke about the suspect and circumstances in the shooting of the two officers.

“I can tell you that Shawn Rehn was known to police, and had a long, extensive criminal record that included acts of violence.” said Commr. Paulson,

Shawn Maxwell Rehn, age 34, of the greater Edmonton area was known to police and further information about the deceased suspect will be released after the RCMP receives the autopsy report.

The RCMP will not be providing any further comment on the contents of this release at this time. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
