As many of you already know, Rowan House had to cancel our main fundraiser this year.
And in true Foothills style, a number of amazing businesses had donated some great items to help us raise money in our silent auction at the event. We have connected with all of them and they’ve generously said we could still use their donations to have an online auction to make up some of the lost revenue we had hoped to bring in from the Purple in the Park Gala.
Between May 8th – 18th you can head over to our Auction on Bidding Owl to place your bids and maybe get a great deal on one of over 50 packages up for grabs! And the cool thing is, once you’ve bid on an item, you will get emails/texts to let you know when you’ve been out-bid so you won’t miss out on the item you really want!
Why are these funds so important?
Each year Rowan House receives an Operational Grant from the Government of Alberta that ensures our Emergency Shelter is staffed with shelter counsellors 24-7 to answer our crisis line and provide around-the-clock support to the families who come to us to find safety, hope and healing.
We did receive some extra money to help us adapt our facility to make it safer to continue to provide an essential service amidst Covid-19, as well as prevent any outbreaks within the shelter. We are allowed to use those funds for things like extra cleaning staff and a different way of providing individual meals rather than the communal meals we used to have.
But shelters are so much more than a bed and our government grant only covers about 60% of our total budget. Things like food, basic toiletries, transportation and even utilities (keeping the shelter lights on the and the house warm) are pieces that require additional funding above what the government provides. Overall, we must still raise approximately 40% of our operating budget to provide our full continuum of care including one-on-one Outreach services to families in a community setting, and Preventative Education programming (School Presentations, Healthy Relationship Groups, Community Education and Awareness).
All of these programs are still operating in the face of Covid-19. Our outreach workers are as busy as ever meeting with their current clients over phone and video calls – and our prevention team has been adapting online programming to continue to provide important education on healthy relationships and abuse. Incidents of domestic violence are rising due to the financial and emotional stress of quarantine and economic hardship – prevention and awareness are so important – now, more than ever.
Over the last 20 years, all of these things have always been made possible because of the generosity of this amazing community and people like you and we are beyond grateful for that.
