Okotoks – The Big Rock

The Big Rock outside of Okotoks off Highway 7 is accessible year round. This erratic slide into it’s present location during the last ice age and, due to it’s composition, is believed to have originated in what is now Jasper National Park. A parking lot and washroom facilities were put in place for the convenience of visitors but in the past this area was closed in winter months. The good news is that you can visit the Big Rock all year around as the parking lot and washrooms will be maintained throughout the winter months as well.

You can read more about the Big Rock on the Alberta Culture website and at Outdoor Escape. Find out more about what makes up the rock and the role it played in the lives of our native people.
