Foothills County, Alta. – The Okotoks RCMP have laid charges against a male following a robbery at a rural residence which occurred on Nov. 19, 2019.
37-year-old Armin Babic of Edmonton is facing the following charges:
– Robbery with a firearm
– Personation of a peace officer using an article, uniform or equipment x 2
– Forcible confinement x2
– Use a firearm in the commission of an offence
– Break and enter with intent to steal a firearm
– Point a firearm
– Theft over $5000 x2
– Theft under$5000
A judicial interim release hearing has been held and Armin Babic was remanded in custody till Friday December 6, 2019 in Okotoks Provincial Court.
A search warrant was obtained on the vehicle being driven by Babic. The RCMP seized a number of items that had been reported stolen during the robbery. Items recovered included a large sum of US dollars, jewelry and a firearm. Offence related property recovered included a firearm, a police style ballistics vest, amongst other evidentiary items.
“We’re glad that this property owner called us and allowed us to manage what could have been a dangerous interaction with the suspect” says Corporal Korey Crerar of the Okotoks RCMP. “It’s a great outcome to be able recover the guns and to return belongings to the home owner. As always, the RCMP is committed to the safety of rural Albertans.”
BACKGROUND
Nov. 19, 2019
Foothills County, Alta. – The Okotoks RCMP have one male in custody following a robbery with a firearm that occurred earlier today at a rural residence.
At 11:28 a.m., the RCMP were dispatched to a 911 call of a robbery. Information provided to the RCMP is that one shot was fired from a gun, but believed to be a blank. The suspect fled the residence and a description was provided to the police. The RCMP contained the area around the residence and within ten minutes of the dispatch, located the vehicle and took the male suspect into custody.
Okotoks RCMP have engaged the Forensic Identification Section for assistance in conducting a scene examination. The suspect vehicle has been seized and a search of the vehicle is pending. Other support units such as the Crime Reduction Unit and criminal analyst are providing their assistance.
The RCMP can assure that there is no further risk to the public in relation to this incident. Several factors of this incident remain under investigation.
An update is anticipated to be released tomorrow, with further information related to the suspect.
