On July 24th, thanks to the hospitality of the Executive and Members of the Elks Club, a very successful organisational meeting was held in the upper hall of the club in Okotoks.
Over sixty potential members were present, and more than thirty others who had previously committed to joining the Branch prior to this meeting were prevented from attending for personal or work related obligations.
At the request of those present, the meeting was chaired by Malcolm Hughes, the Deputy Commander of District #5 in which the Branch would be located. He opened the meeting proper with the Legion’s formal Opening Ceremony. Meanwhile, Mr Larry Schielke was elected as Secretary/Treasurer for the evening’s proceedings.
Following a brief outline of Membership Categories and Qualifications along with the Purposes and Objects of the Legion, the first order of business was to pass the motion to request a Charter for a new Branch. As was expected, it was passed unanimously.
First Year Dues for 2014 were discussed and set by motion as follows: New Members were assessed at $40.00 and those who are former Legion Members seeking “reinstatement” were assessed $50.00. All those who join the Branch will pay an additional “enrolment” fee of $10.00, including those who choose to transfer from other Branches when the charter is received.
Membership Applications for most of those present were completed, dues were paid and receipts issued. In other cases, forms were taken for completion because supporting documents were not immediately available.
The final order of business before the official closing ceremony was to elect an Acting President to serve until the Branch has its own Charter and Branch By-Laws following which full elections will be held. Mr. Ralph Wilson, a former RCMP Officer, was duly elected by acclamation and he was joined by Mr. Larry Schielke as Secretary/Treasurer.
