A 2014 Municipal Census was conducted in Okotoks to capture the annual population increase in order to maximize future per capita grant funding opportunities. The census was conducted from May 7 to June 27, 2014. Radio, newspaper, electronic and portable sign advertising took place to heighten resident awareness that a census was being conducted, the reason for it, and that only one question was being asked: What is the usual number of residents that live in this household as of May 7, 2014?
PIN numbers were delivered to 9,461 households encouraging residents to complete the census online. This year 49.7% of residents used the online option, as compared to last year’s participation of 42.8%. Software was used allowing enumerators to enter data on iPads at the resident’s door and provide Administration with ‘live’ data. After the online option closed, enumerators were required to revisit households a minimum of 3 additional times to obtain information. The outstanding efforts of the enumerators resulted in only 88 occupied households not responding to the multiple requests for information.
Alberta Municipal Affairs requires completion of quality assurance checks, a random check of 10% of households to confirm the data collected. Quality assurance checks were completed from June 16 to 27, 2014.
The total number of residents in the Town of Okotoks as of May 7, 2014 is 27,331, with the population per quadrant as follows:
NE: 14,025
SE: 7,391
NW: 656
SW: 5,242
The Town’s population has increased by 1,012 residents (3.8%) from the 2013 census count of 26,319.
A Population Affidavit to report the number of residents must be provided to the Minister of Municipal Affairs.
