Foothills School Division: 2016 Priorities

Foothills School Division: 2016 Priorities

On behalf of Foothills School Division’s Board of Trustees and all of our staff, Happy New Year! And I would like to extend a special welcome back to our students and staff.

The New Year always brings with it so much hope and possibility. Many people make resolutions at this time of the year, so it seems fitting to share some of Foothills’ priorities for the year ahead:

At the beginning of December, the division released its Education Plan for the 2015-16 school year. It contains strategies to address key educational outcomes set by the Province related to student learning and achievement, quality teaching and school leadership, and governance – including the provision of safe and healthy learning environments. I encourage you to take a closer look. You can find the report on the Foothills School Division website at

Beyond the core learning that takes place in our schools, we believe that there are other important factors that contribute to student achievement, including:

  • A constant focus on building our culture of safe, caring, welcoming and inclusive learning environments. Each school embeds the teaching of character development at all grade levels through a variety of programs that fit their school communities. These programs are aimed at building healthy relationships, bullying prevention, and fostering attributes such as respect, empathy, integrity, responsibility and citizenship.
  • High quality staff and excellent teaching is another key factor. In this regard we provide our staff with regular, strategic professional development aimed at improving student learning and success.
  • And a continuing an emphasis on communicating openly and engaging often with parents on their child’s progress.

We are also excited about the future benefits for school families in the fast growing community of Okotoks with plans for a new K-9 school at west 32nd Street north of the Town – and modernization of École Secondaire Foothills Composite High School/Alberta High School of Fine Arts. We’re aiming for construction of the K-9 to start in September 2016.

It promises to be a busy but exciting 2016 in Foothills School Division as we continue our focus on ensuring success for all of the students we are privileged to serve.
