National Writing Award for Okotoks Student Who Answered the Question Show Us Why Canadians Should Vote

Hats off to Harriet Smith, a grade 9 student at École Okotoks Junior High School (ÉOJHS) on placing first in the Writing category of the 2014 National Democracy Challenge!

Harriet wins an 11-inch MacBook Air laptop for her entry, “In a Cage”, illustrating how Canada can serve as an example to other countries that Canadian citizens don’t need a law to make them vote; all they have to do is care about what’s happening in their country.

A record number of Canadians aged 14 to 17 took part in the National Democracy Challenge, submitting videos, images and pieces of working on the theme “Show us why Canadians should vote”. Their creations were evaluated by a panel of celebrity judges including political satirist Rick Mercer.
