Nanton RCMP- May’s focus is on young drivers and motorcycle safety

Nanton, Alberta – During the month of May, Nanton RCMP will be conducting several traffic initiatives with a focus on young drivers and motorcycle safety. The local traffic operation reflects the Government of Alberta’s Traffic Safety Plan aimed at reducing serious injury and death on the province’s roadways. Throughout the month, the RCMP in partnership with Alberta Sheriffs and the MD of Willow Creek will be enhancing all traffic stops with the above noted groups by taking the time to have a short chat about their driving safety.

“In winter, drivers don’t need to think about motorcyclists, so it is important each spring to remind everyone to be on the lookout and share the road for our two-wheeled friends,” said Nanton Detachment Commander, Corporal  Travis Ogilvie. ”Spring brings more cars and bikes out on the roads, which means the risks of distracted driving go way up too. Our goal is to make sure all drivers – and especially young people – get that.”

Between May 23 and May 29, Nanton RCMP will be ramping up enforcement aimed at getting young drivers to buckle up, put down the cellphone and slow down. Local residents can expect to see a heightened police presence in school zones and on local roads and highways. Nanton RCMP will be taking the time to stop and educate young drivers on the importance of safe driving and the potential impacts of driving errors on them, their passengers, other motorists and their families. Police will also be reminding young drivers to keep an eye out for motorcyclists.

The motorcycle initiative will be occurring between May 31 and June 3rd, when there will be enhanced enforcement with an emphasis on bike safety at the intersections of Highway 533 and 26 Avenue in Nanton and, Highway 533 and Highway 22 near Chain Lakes. There will also be roving traffic patrols on area highways. Part of the initiative will see Nanton RCMP increase motorcycle traffic stops to ensure they are operating safely.
