MP John Barlow’s Christmas Statement

The magical Christmas season is upon us once again. It is a time to reflect on the triumphs of 2017 and to look forward with excitement and hope to the New Year.

I am truly thankful to serve as your Member of Parliament, to represent our extraordinary riding of Foothills. It is also an honour to be appointed as Shadow Minister for Agriculture & Agri-Food under the leadership of Andrew Scheer. Agriculture is such an integral part of our southern Alberta heritage and I have embraced this opportunity to represent Foothills’ farmers, ranchers and agri-businesses as well as work with our agriculture stakeholders here and across Canada.

Through my travels across our beautiful riding, I continue to be impressed by the passion and spirit of our communities. From the dedicated volunteers who drive community initiatives and charities, to the committed advocates raising awareness on numerous policy ideas, each and every one of you continues to be the heartbeat to our riding.

This past year has been filled with many great celebrations, as well as some hardships. We stood strong together as we faced adversity and came out further united.

Through the turmoil of the devastation of the Kenow fire in Waterton National Park, neighbours supported neighbours, and heroes stood firm defending our homes, ranches and businesses. To all the men and women who fought the wildfires; for your tireless, unselfish and courageous service, we thank you.

In addition, we came together – farmers, professionals, small business owners – and successfully stood up against the unfair Liberal tax hikes.
For every letter you wrote, every phone call you made, I thank you for being a part of the change. Your voice can – and did – make the difference.

There is still much work ahead for us to achieve in 2018. With lingering proposals of additional Liberal tax changes, unknown outcomes hinged on trade negotiations with India, NAFTA and TPP, and a growing list of Liberal ethical scandals – I will continue to stand up for the rights of the constituents of Foothills, and represent your voice in the House of Commons.

I encourage residents to continue to write to me – if there is a Federal change you wish to see, an idea you support or if you have a concern I want to hear from you. It is always a pleasure listen to my constituents.

This year, in collaboration with Canada’s 150th celebrations, we also celebrated outstanding residents who made an impact here in Foothills. I extend my greatest congratulations to all of those who were honoured this year, and thank you for your contributions to our communities.

There is tremendous community spirit throughout Foothills and I am sure this will shine throughout the season as we support those who are facing difficult times.

Christmas is about spending time with family and friends and making lasting memories to share for a lifetime.

From my family to yours, I wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with fun, cheer and special holiday magic.
