MP John Barlow Welcomes Federal Assessment of Springbank Project

High River, AB –MP John Barlow today said he supports the decision by the federal government to start its own environmental assessment of the Springbank reservoir project, including gathering comments from the public. The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is asking for comments until July 25 about the impact of the Springbank reservoir project.

“I’m pleased with the decision by the federal government to proceed with an assessment of the proposed Springbank reservoir project. After meeting with residents over the last several months I met with the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment to encourage the review,” said Foothills MP John Barlow. “I am hopeful that this assessment and resulting consultations will be an opportunity for those residents impacted to voice their concerns.”

The Springbank Off-stream Reservoir, or Springbank Project, is a flood mitigation project that would divert the Elbow River into a new storage reservoir in Springbank, located on top of Val Vista Ranch. It was proposed as part of an overall provincial flood mitigation strategy, following the damage caused by widespread flooding in southern Alberta in June 2013.
