Alberta’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Ricardo Miranda, will host Canada’s federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for sport, physical activity and recreation in Lethbridge to talk about the next steps towards a more physically active country.
Canada’s Minister for Sport and Persons with Disabilities, Carla Qualtrough, and the Parliamentary Secretary to Canada’s Minister of Health, Kamal Khera, will co-host the meetings with Minister Miranda. Over two days, June 8-9, discussion will focus on moving forward on the Framework for Recreation in Canada, the Canadian Sport Policy and other sport, physical activity and recreation policy issues and opportunities.
“I am extremely proud to host Minister Qualtrough and my provincial and territorial counterparts in sport, physical activity and recreation. Alberta is a beautiful place and we have made great strides in living up to the Framework for Recreation in Canada and the Canadian Sport Policy. I am pleased to be able to show off both.”
The federal, provincial and territorial ministers meet on an annual basis to advance sport, physical activity and recreation in Canada. Topics for discussion at this year’s meeting include the prevention of, and safe recovery from, concussions, participation of Indigenous youth in sport, and the impact sport and recreation can have in rebuilding communities affected by disasters.
In May, Statistics Canada reported that in 2014, sport activities accounted for 0.3 per cent of Canada’s GDP and more than 101,000 jobs. The same year, Culture and Sport goods and services contributed $6.4 billion to Alberta’s economy and more than 67,300 jobs. A recent survey indicated that almost all Albertans (96.4 per cent) feel that recreation is an important factor contributing to overall quality of life.
