Edmonton – Canada Day is a great occasion for Albertans to hit the roads and enjoy the long weekend festivities. This Canada Day, Alberta RCMP Traffic Services will be concentrating enforcement activities on impaired driving.
“We remind Albertans that driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs is never okay. Impaired driving is both criminal and dangerous,” says Supt. Rick Gardner, Alberta Traffic Sheriffs. “No one should ever have to go through the pain of losing a loved one, or see them suffer from serious injuries due to a collision.”
“Throughout Canada Day long weekend in 2018, three people lost their lives and 46 were injured in motor vehicle collisions in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions,” says Supt. Gary Graham, Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. “We all have a responsibility to ensure our roads are safe for all users, especially during Canada Day long weekend when we expect increased traffic volumes.”
Alberta RCMP encourages road users to practice the following traffic safety tips:
· Bicyclists must always obey traffic signals and yield right-of-way at uncontrolled intersections.
· When you find yourself in a construction zone, always slow down to ensure the safety of drivers, riders and workers.
· If you use a trailer, make sure it is fully fastened, the lights, hitch, hook, wheels and brakes are working and tires are in good condition.
