Legislative Assembly of Alberta Recognizes the Holy Month of Ramadan

It is during the holy month of Ramadan that Muslims believe God revealed the Quran, Islam’s sacred text, to the Prophet Muhammad. During Ramadan, which this year began on June 7 and will end on July 7, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. It is a time of spiritual discipline, deep contemplation and increased generosity.

Over 1 million people in Canada, including 150,000 in Alberta follow the faith of Islam.

“Celebrating Ramadan here at the Alberta Legislature Building enables us to learn more about the sacred traditions of Islam and celebrates the diverse strength of our province,” said the Honourable Robert E. Wanner, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. “Recognizing this holy month highlights the long-standing relationship between the province’s Muslim communities and the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.”
