Jean and Panda Statement on Vaisakhi

CALGARY, AB (April 13, 2016): Today, Wildrose Leader Brian Jean and Calgary-Foothills MLA Prasad Panda released the following statement to mark Vaisakhi:

“For Sikhs in Alberta and across the world, Vaisakhi is a day of great celebration and deep religious significance.

“It is the anniversary of the founding of the Khalsa Sikh community by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh guru, who baptized the Five Beloved Ones in the Amrit Sanchar ceremony and instituted the five Ks of Sikhism in 1699. Vaisakhi also marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year.

“Sikhs in many parts of India and around the globe also welcome a new harvest season and a new year on Vaisakhi.

“Across Alberta, Sikhs will mark this day by gathering with family and friends at Gurdwaras and staging festive parades and processions called Nagar Kirtans.

“To all Sikhs and East Indians celebrating Vaisakhi today, we extend our personal best wishes, on behalf of Wildrose.”
