Calgary, AB — A 100-year-old alumnus is one of three inspirational speakers to be honoured during the May Convocation ceremonies at SAIT Polytechnic.
Clarence Hollingworth is joined by successful businessman Dave Mowat and news anchor Linda Olsen as SAIT’s honorary degree recipients.
“All three of these individuals are an inspiration to SAIT graduates preparing to embark on their career path,” says Dr. David Ross, President and CEO of SAIT Polytechnic. “As we near our centennial in 2016, we are especially proud to recognize Clarence Hollingworth who has been a member of the SAIT family from the early days.”
Honorary degree recipient: Dave Mowat
President and CEO of ATB Financial, Mowat is a born-in-Alberta Albertan as well as a move-to-Alberta Albertan, joining ATB in 2007 after leading Vancity Credit Union in Vancouver for 10 years. He serves on the boards of STARS, Telus Community, MasterCard Canada, Alberta Blue Cross and Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre. Mowat graduated with a commerce degree from the University of British Columbia. In 2014, he was named Alberta Venture’s Business Person of the Year. Mowat is receiving an Honorary Bachelor of Business Administration.
Honorary degree recipient: Clarence Hollingworth
Hollingworth began his relationship with SAIT at the age of six when he attended the 1921 Heritage Hall cornerstone ceremony at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (PITA), which later became the Polytechnic we know today. A graduate from PITA’s industrial electricity program, Hollingworth returned as a teacher after several years in the Canadian Navy. Hollingworth remained at SAIT for 28 years. He is receiving an Honorary Bachelor of Science.
Honorary degree recipient: Linda Olsen
Born and raised in Calgary, award-winning journalist Linda Olsen graduated from SAIT Polytechnic with Honours in Broadcast News in 1988. Currently a co-anchor for Global Calgary, Olsen has reported on some of the most significant events in the city, including the 2013 southern Alberta flood. After 27 years, Linda is one of the longest-serving female news anchors in Calgary. She was named a Top 40 Under 40 by Avenue magazine and received Global Calgary’s Woman of Vision award. Olsen is receiving an Honorary Bachelor of Business Administration.
