High River RCMP – Theft of Motor Vehicle

On Friday, March 16, 2018 at approximately 6:10 am, High River RCMP responded to a two vehicle collision on 498 Ave E.  One of the drivers involved in the collision stole a taxi cab that had stopped to provide assistance.  Due to extremely dense fog at the time, police were unable to determine in which direction the suspect had fled.  The vehicle that the suspect had been driving at the time of the collision was later determined to have been stolen out of Calgary.  The taxi cab was equipped with a tracking device, allowing the police to track and eventually locate it and the suspect in a rural area southwest of High River.  Dustin Andrew Sklerek, 31 of no fixed address, has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, three counts of possession of stolen property, possession of break-in instruments, obstructing a police officer and driving while disqualified.  Sklerek has been remanded in custody pending his first court appearance.  Still under investigation is a large quantity of suspected stolen goods that Sklerek had transferred from the stolen vehicle to the taxi cab prior to the police arriving on scene at the collision.
