High River RCMP Caution Youth About Online Safety

High River RCMP Caution Youth About Online Safety

High River, Alta – On May 12, 2020 a High River area youth was using a well known social media chat app “Hangouts” to network with classmates, and received messages from an unknown user. The unknown user shared a photo of himself, which appeared to be that of a male, approximately 40-50 years old. The unknown user encouraged the youth to share photos, at which point the youth ceased contact with the potential online predator and the incident was reported to the High River RCMP.

As families are spending more time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, many youth are using social media regularly to communicate with friends and classmates.

The High River RCMP encourage youth to take the following precautions to ensure their online safety online:
– Do not share your name, address, phone number, or any other personal information online
– Do not message or share pictures with anybody you don’t know personally
– Assume any information you share online, including pictures, could become public
– If you are contacted by someone you think might be an online predator, tell an adult right away

Parents are encouraged to be aware of their child’s online activity and to help educate them about the risks of sharing personal information online.
