Though Guy Weadick is best known for his involvement with the Calgary Stampede from 1912 on; he and his wife Florence LeDue were better known in the High River area as hometown residents.
The High River Ag Society has hosted the WPCA chuckwagon races for a number of years on the third weekend of June. A rodeo was added and approximately 15 years ago, the decision was made to bring in the CPRA (Canadian Professional Rodeo Association) giving our venue pro rodeo status.
Guy Weadick was considered synonymous with the western heritage of High River and the surrounding area. When it came time to name the pro rodeo his descendants were contacted for permission to name the rodeo, The Guy Weadick Memorial Rodeo. It ran under this name until 2011 when the High River Ag Society changed the brand name of the event to Guy Weadick Days to encompass 2 weekends of WPCA chuckwagons and a full weekend of rodeo excitement. The event has now gone back to the original third weekend of June, beginning on Thursday evening; culminating in an exciting finals performance for both rodeo and chuckwagons on Sunday afternoon. This year the events have been held over 2 weekends with the chucks running in July this year (due to poor track conditions in June).
This year’s Guy Weadick Days is a chance for the residents of High River and our visitors to trade in our Hard Hats for a Cowboy Hat to celebrate our western heritage and community spirit.
