Gleichen, AB – Yesterday, at approximately 5:00 p.m., the Gleichen RCMP Detachment responded to a report that a local resident found a weathered skull near the Bow River, south of the Town of Gleichen.
The place where the skull was found is part of the flood plain of the Bow River which was inundated with water in 2013 during the flooding that hit the region. Investigators, including members from the Calgary RCMP Major Crimes Unit (MCU) and RCMP Forensic Identification Section (FIS) are examining the scene today.
The investigation is alive to the fact that the area in which the skull was found was one in which Indigenous peoples may have practiced funeral rights, therefore, great care will be taken to determine the origins of the skull.
No additional information is available at this time, however, an update will be forthcoming when new details have been confirmed by investigators.
