Edmonton, September 21, 2014: At the 2014 AUMA Annual Convention, one topic is at the front of mind of many municipalities: the Municipal Government Act review. AUMA is looking for significant updates to the act, including property assessment and taxation, equitable sharing of revenue among municipalities, and a share of provincial revenues.
“We look forward to working with Minister McQueen and the opportunity to discuss our priorities for change,” said AUMA President Helen Rice.
AUMA has undertaken substantial engagement with municipalities as well as external stakeholders through our President’s Summit, and there is significant agreement that fundamental changes to the legislation are needed.
“Municipalities need to be recognized as the order of government and AUMA as a partner in amending the current MGA so that it addresses the needs of the 21st century,” said Rice “What is needed is a new provincial/municipal relationship.”
AUMA is very pleased with the progress and approach of the MGA Taskforce and will continue to work collaboratively towards the spring 2015 schedule previously committed to by the province.
