Forecast Rainfall Increases River Safety Concerns

HIGH RIVER, AB: Alberta Environment has issued a high stream flow advisory for the Highwood River due to the high rainfall that is expected over the next several hours. Alberta weather forecasters are currently predicting an additional 20 mm of rain to fall this afternoon and end this evening.

The Town of High River is encouraging residents to be extra cautious around the river banks as the River Forecasting Centre predicts the Highwood River could rise by approximately 1.25 m.

Although there is no concern for flooding this added rainfall is expected to increase the flow of the river to approximately 150 cubic metres per second, which can create safety concerns for recreational activities taking place in or near the river.

The Town urges residents and visitors to ensure their safety by using extreme caution if engaging in activities around the river for the next several days.

High groundwater could also cause problems at this time. Residents should watch for water pooling on roads or near their property, and ensure downspouts and eaves troughs are functioning.

The Town will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide regular updates as they become available on the Town’s twitter account at @TownofHighRiver, on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/highriver.ca, and through the Town website at http://www.highriver.ca.
