In celebration of the 50th anniversary of our national flag, our Government is honouring 50 Canadians and organizations who have contributed significantly to the well-being of our citizens. Since it was first raised on February 15, 1965, the Canadian flag has proudly flown on Parliament Hill, in communities across the country, and at Canada’s missions around the world.
In announcing a list of 50 Canadians honoured on February 15, 2015, Prime Minister Stephen Harper affirmed,“Our Government has made it a tradition on National Flag of Canada Day to present a Peace Tower flag to Canadians who exemplify the values that we hold most dear.”
Following the announcement, John Barlow, Member of Parliament for Macleod, announced Mr. Emile Blokland, of High River is among the 50 Canadians selected by the Prime Minister. Mr. Blokland is the former Mayor of High River, and is being given a Peace Tower flag in recognition of his handling of the High River flood in June 2013.
“This is a deserving recognition for Mr. Blokland who showed unwavering commitment and courage in the face of incredible adversity during the 2013 flood,” said Macleod MP John Barlow. “I am honoured to present a Peace Tower flag to Mr. Blokland.”
Congratulations to Mr. Blokland and our deepest appreciation for his selfless efforts during such a trying time. Mr. Blokland will be presented with his flag during a ceremony in March.
