Faith Forum ~ I Need Somebody Bigger Than I

Faith Forum pi 1

I’m not ashamed to say I need somebody bigger than myself to live life. I don’t feel I need to always put on my ‘tough woman’ face and answers in order to be accepted. Very often life has not been easy and so I am not always going to answer ‘great!’ when somebody asks me how I’m doing.

In our society, ‘toughness’ and ‘cowboying up’ are often the norm for handling hard issues in life. To some extent that’s good because sometimes that’s all that it takes, especially for some people or people with manageable problems. For others though, or for those that have larger than life issues – that just won’t cut it. Alchohol, diving into work 24/7, drugs to dull the pain, going into silent mode, medical conditions begin to surface because of stress, positive thinking, meditation, visual imagery, feng shui – some of these coping mechanisms are helpful, some obviously are not; but even the good kind of help listed here cannot give a person that permanent, underneath-solid-holding-you-up ongoing peace that can be there always and never goes away.

“There is no one like the God of Israel.

He rides across the heavens to help you,

across the skies in majestic splendor.

The eternal God is your refuge,

and his everlasting arms are under you…” (Deuteronomy 33:26,27a NLT)

When you invite the God of Creation to be in your life, ask him to forgive the wrongdoings in your life, and give him the reins or control of your life – you have ‘his everlasting arms under you,’ You still have the hard times (sometimes more so), the life changing difference is that He is now your Rock – constant, steady, sure – who will go through those things with you, giving you the strength you need for those dark moments and situations as you need it because He invites you to lean on Him as your main pillar of support. He wants to do that. The almighty God as both your close personal friend and as your refuge, it doesn’t get better than that. Somebody bigger than me.

There’s a song sung by Elvis that says these thoughts:

Somebody Bigger Than You And I

“Who made the mountains, who made the trees

Who made the rivers flow to the sea

And who sends the rain when the earth is dry

Somebody bigger than you and I

Who made the flowers to bloom in the spring

Who made the song for the robins to sing

And who hung the moon and the stars in the sky

Somebody bigger than you and I

He lights the way when the road is long

He keeps you company

And with His love to guide you

He walks beside you

Just like He walks with me

When we’re filled with despair

Who gives me courage to go from there

And who gives me faith that will never die

Somebody bigger than you and I” 1

I don’t know about you, but for me that ‘Somebody Who is Bigger Than You or I’ is the Rock who holds me with his everlasting arms underneath me – every day, every hour as need be. Much of the time I don’t understand the whys of the very stressful and hard things in my life; but I choose to trust in the God who’s son Jesus died and rose again out of his love for me so I could be His child. With love like that He’s more than adequate to carry me through life. I can handle that. How about you? If He can do it for me He can do it for you.
