Energy Minister to strengthen trade relationship with China

Energy Minister Margaret McCuaig-Boyd will support Alberta-China energy partnerships on a mission to China from October 10-16.

Minister McCuaig-Boyd will encourage investment in Alberta’s energy industry, while also sharing energy and environmental best practices. This trip follows Premier Rachel Notley’s mission to eastern Canada and the United States to promote Alberta as a healthy place to invest and do business.

“China represents enormous potential as both a customer and investor for Alberta’s energy industry. Maintaining strong relationships with the world’s largest energy consumer will open future opportunities for Alberta as a global energy supplier.”

Margaret McCuaig-Boyd, Minister of Energy

The Minister will be meeting with China’s largest oil and gas companies, which together account for approximately 80 per cent of China’s refining capacity and more than $35 billion in investments in Alberta. Accompanying the Minister will be a delegation of executives from Alberta’s oil and gas sector, including Suncor, Encana, Enbridge, MEG Energy and EBW. These executives are also board members of the China-Alberta Petroleum Centre.

“Market access to Asia is important to Alberta’s energy industry, and the government relationship provides a solid foundation for industry to be successful.”

Greg Stringham, Vice President, Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers

The Minister will attend and speak at several events, including:

  • The 5th Annual Asia Shale Gas Summit in Shanghai
  • China-Alberta Petroleum Centre Annual Board Meeting in Beijing
  • Tour of the University of Calgary’s Global Research Initiative for Research in Unconventional Oil and Gas – Beijing Site
  • Tour of Dow Chemical Company’s facility in Shanghai where processed natural gas products from Alberta are turned into further value-added materials to make goods in China.

The estimated international mission cost for the Minister, one political staff, and two public servants is $33,000.
