Electric System Operator Welcomes New Members

Energy Minister Sonya Savage has appointed three members to the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) board.

The newly appointed members offer strong and diverse skill sets honed largely within the energy sector that will complement and expand the board’s knowledge and experience.

“As the agency responsible for the day-to-day operation of the province’s electricity grid, the AESO’s work is vital to all Albertans. The complex nature of this work requires proven leadership and expertise, and I’m confident these appointees will contribute greatly to the AESO’s ongoing success.”  Sonya Savage, Minister of Energy

The following members have been appointed for three-year terms:

  • Ann-Marie Osinski, a senior financial executive with extensive strategic planning, risk and financial management and business development experience in the global energy, transportation, distribution and logistics industries.
  • Aaron Engen, a managing director and co-head of the Power & Energy Infrastructure Group at BMO Capital Markets; also a lawyer, he practiced corporate and securities law, mainly in the power and utilities sector.
  • Karl Johannson, a former executive vice-president and president of natural gas at TransCanada Pipelines, brings strong financial, operations and investment experience to the board.

Quick facts

  • The AESO is the corporation established as the Independent System Operator under the Electric Utilities Act.
  • Under the act, the minister has the authority to appoint up to nine AESO members and designate one of the members as chair.
  • These appointments fill vacant positions.
  • Each member is eligible to receive a $27,500 annual retainer and $1,000 for each AESO board and committee meeting they attend.
