Devon Canada launches 2015 Science Giants Grant

Devon Science GiantsCalgary –Starting April 6, Devon Canada will be accepting applications for the Science Giants grant. Each year, Devon’s Science Giants grant helps science teachers create innovative lesson plans and course curriculum by providing them with up to $5,000 to make their vision a reality. Through this grant, Devon is able to provide funding that helps students understand theories taught in the classroom by completing hands-on experiments with advanced resources that the schools would not otherwise have access to.

Since the grant program launched in 2011, Devon has contributed $150,000 to junior high and high school classrooms in Alberta and B.C. “As a company, Devon encourages innovative thinking and practices that improve all areas of our business and the communities where we work and our employees live.” says Devon’s Director of Government and, Nadine Barber.  “We are proud to support the creativity and ingenuity we know exists in our schools.

In previous years, funding has been awarded to outstanding proposals from teachers from all over Alberta. One teacher who has really made a difference in his school is Aaron Dublenko of Queen Elizabeth High School in Edmonton.  With the Science Giant’s grant, Dublenko created a Center for Sustainable Development that has allowed the students of Queen Elizabeth to plan, design and implement their own projects.

“We have to tap into what kids like to do and focus on helping them create and innovate rather than simply focus on getting good grades,” said Dublenko.

The centre contains an aquaponic aquarium that helps students understand ecosystems, how they work and what factors need to be included for different plants and animals to survive. The aquarium was designed by students and built by science professionals in order to turn students’ ideas into reality. Students research what organisms will survive in the climate then determine what resources they require to sustain in the aquarium.

All junior high and high school students located in Devon’s operating areas and commuter communities across Alberta, and British Columbia are eligible to apply. The grant deadline is May 8, 2015.
