I wish to extend warm congratulations from the Canadian Science Policy Centre to the Honorable Dr. Kirsty Duncan and the Honorable Navdeep Bains for their recent appointments to two important portfolios that shape Canada’s scientific, economic and technological development.
The establishment of a new Federal Minister of Science is a positive indication of the priority this Government will place on science and research in Canada. As a scientist, Dr. Kristy Duncan is an excellent choice for this Ministry; under her leadership, we look forward to an enhanced status for science and research in Canada.
Hon Navdeep Bains, with his experience in the private sector and links to academia, is perfectly positioned as Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development to make science and innovation the core of Canada’s development policy over the next few years.
Having received a firm mandate from Canadians for “Real Change Now,” Canada’s scientific community is looking forward, with much anticipation and hope, to the positive changes this new Cabinet will bring to Canada’s Federal government and we look forward to seeing the transformations on a number of levels. I hope that engaging scientific community in decision making process, restoring R&D funding to the average of OECD level, improved communication of government scientists, ensuring business investment in R&D and increased business innovation, and building the foundation for a knowledge based economy are among the priorities of the new government.
I wish you both all the best and I hope that, under your leadership, science, technology and innovation landscape reach new frontiers in in Canada.
Sincerely,
Mehrdad Hariri
