Cross Country and Alpine Skiing for 55 Plus Winter Games Cancelled

cross countryGames officials decided to cancel the cross country skiing event, set to be hosted at Allison Creek, two weeks before the opening ceremonies.

Lack of snow in the Crowsnest Pass area is the cause of the cancellation.

According to Games Chair Lea Switzer, the decision was made after consultation with Alberta Sport Connection and the Alberta 55 plus Association.

“Cross country skiing participants will be contacted directly about the cancellation and all registration fees will be returned,” says Switzer.

Alpine skiing will also be cancelled due to the closure of the event venue, Castle Mountain Resort.

alpineAccording to the resort’s website, Castle Mountain sees an average winter snowfall of 910 cm. To date the resort has only received 264 cm.

“The process for the event cancellation will be the same as the earlier cross country skiing cancellation,” says Games Chair Lea Switzer. “Alpine skiing participants will be contacted and their registration fees will be returned.”

Despite the cancellations of alpine and cross country skiing, Switzer says this shouldn’t dampen the spirit of the rest of the Games.

“Lethbridge has embraced the Games through support and volunteerism, we have some amazing events planned for all residents to attend and of course the competition in the remaining 12 events is what really brings us all together.”

The 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games will welcome over 1100 participants who will participate in 13 events from Feb. 19-22.
