Conservatives Call for Action on Grain Backlog

OTTAWA, ON – Conservative Shadow Ministers for Agriculture and Agri-Food Luc Berthold and John Barlow, with the support of NDP Agriculture Critic Alistair MacGregor, will call on the Standing Committee of Agriculture and Agri-food to hold an emergency committee meeting to recognize and address the worst grain backlog in years. Mr. Berthold and Mr. Barlow released the following statement:

“Time is of the essence. Justin Trudeau must stop blaming others for Liberal mismanagement and take immediate action to resolve the backlog in grain delivery and provide the necessary tools to hold railways accountable for inadequate service levels.

“Conservatives provided a path forward to the Liberals to ensure that Canadian farmers could get their commodities to market in a predictable and timely way. Unfortunately, the Liberals ignored our advice and have allowed this dire situation to go from bad to worse.

“We call on the Liberals to immediately recognize and address this crisis, and help Canadian farmers and the families reap the benefits of their hard work.”
