On May 24th, 2015 at 1420 hrs. Cochrane RCMP members responded to a complaint of a vehicle fire on highway # 22, approx. 1/2 km north of Highway # 1a in Cochrane. Investigation determined the tractor trailer unit was delivering fuel to the Gas Plus gas station situated in the community of Sunset when the driver observed smoke billow from the engine compartment. The driver stopped roadside after hearing a small explosion in the engine compartment. A Cochrane Traffic specialist was in the area and observed the smoke come from the tractor unit and stopped and provided assistance. While roadside, the engine compartment caught fire, an attempt by the driver to douse the fire with an extinguisher failed. The fire grew engulfing the cab. Cochrane Fire was called and attended. Cochrane Fire managed to get the fire under control before it reached the fuel tanks. The tractor unit received extensive fire damage. Highway # 22 north of Highway # 1A and Highway # 22 at Sunset Drive was closed to the motoring public for approx. 1 1/2 hrs. The tractor trailer Super B was carrying 40,000 liters of gasoline and 15000 liters of diesel. The driver reported to police his oil temperature and water temperature on the unit was extremely hot, which may have contributed to the vehicle catching fire. The driver, a 30 year old male a resident of Edmonton, Alberta was not injured.
