Children Get Lessons in Traffic Safety

Traffic Safety Day teaches kids to be streetwise and safe.

Sept 25, 2019 – Special events across Alberta offer fun and interactive ways to teach children safe behaviours when it comes to crossing the street, getting on and off buses, and walking to school.

Back to school facts

  • The Government of Alberta and community groups have organized Traffic Safety Day events since 1997.
  • School buses in Alberta travel an estimated 450,000 kilometres a day – that’s more than 10 times around the Earth.
  • The penalty for failing to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights is $543 and six demerit points.
  • Alternating flashing amber lights mean a school bus is slowing down to stop and drivers should do the same.
