Calgary School Release Their Own Hitchbots Across the Canada

A team made up of Grade 4/5 students and teachers from Erin Woods School in Calgary got together to design and build a number of hitchhiking robots, modelled after the original hitchBOT that travelled across Canada in the summer of 2014.

On Friday, June 24th they officially launched the first 3 Hitchbots! These were completed ahead of schedule so the kids decided to get them started on their journeys.

Erin Woods HitchbotsIn the first few days, these little guys have been posted on Twitter when spotted at the Calgary Zoo, Calgary Tower and with a couple of Calgary Police Officers (no he wasn’t breaking any laws, just hitching a ride), in Cochrane at Mackay’s Ice Cream and with the big black diamond in Black Diamond! The Hitchbots are now all across Canada so if you spot one of them don’t forgot to Tweet your photo or post it on Instagram!

The students want to see where their creations get to and in turn they will learn more about our great country. Throughout the process of creating their Hitchbots the kids have learned about the different cultures, music, food, etc and also the landmarks that make up Canada. They also learned about electricity, appropriate building materials, weather-proofing and robotics. Each Hitchbot will travel with a detailed instruction booklet, so if you come across one of these little guys read the booklet and help him fulfill his purpose.
