Brooks, AB – On the evening of Thursday, April 28, 2016, at approximately 10:07 p.m., members of the Brooks RCMP detachment received a report that a local man, who was tending his cattle in a field about ten kilometers west of Brooks, had found what was believed to be human remains.
The scene was processed by the RCMP’s Forensic Identification Section (FIS) from Calgary, as well as a member of the RCMP’s Police Dog Services (PDS). The following day, Friday, April 29, 2016, a thorough search of the area was conducted with the assistance of Medicine Hat Search and Rescue.
The remains were transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Calgary where an autopsy was conducted yesterday. The Medical Examiner and the Forensic Pathologist have determined that the remains are human in origin, however, additional examination will be required to determine the gender, age and identity of the individual.
Police are continuing their investigation into this matter as the Brooks RCMP detachment works with the RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit (MCU) from Calgary and the Office of the Medical Examiner, also in Calgary.
Additional details are not available at this time, however, should new information be confirmed through the ongoing investigation, an update will be provided.
